Data-driven decision-making - Power BI at House of PM

How can project figures be prepared in such a way that they really help?
This question was the focus of an internal training course at House of PM - with the aim of making Power BI specifically usable for project management. In practice, it's not just about collecting data, but also about making connections visible and making better decisions on this basis.

Practical, interactive and directly related to the project business

In the two-day training course, we intensively explored the possibilities of Power BI - with a focus on the challenges that our consultants experience every day in customer projects:

  • Data import and preparation:
We have merged data from Excel and Jira, transformed it and put it into a usable structure.
  • Interactive reports and dashboards:
Instead of static reports, we have developed dynamic visualizations - understandable, clear and customizable.
  • Keep an eye on projects:
Whether status, risks or budgets - with Power BI, you can quickly and visually get to the heart of key figures.
  • Automatic update:
We have set up automatic data updates so that reports do not become outdated - for an always up-to-date basis for decision-making.
  • Implementing your own use cases:
In small teams, we analysed and visualized real project scenarios and presented solutions - from data analysis to management presentations.

From internal training to application at the customer

What we have learned in training flows directly into our project practice. Whether in PMO structures, project monitoring or reporting to stakeholders - Power BI helps us to reduce complexity and create transparency. We do not think in terms of standard solutions, but develop individual dashboards that fit the project and the organization. This turns data into real decision support - comprehensible, visual and up-to-date at all times.

Our conclusion:

Power BI is much more than just a reporting tool. Used correctly, it opens up new perspectives on project progress, makes risks visible at an early stage and helps to set clear priorities. It sharpens the focus on the essentials - and strengthens data-based decision-making in projects.
