Active listening is a communication technique in which the listener consciously responds to the speaker with full attention. The aim is to understand the content of the words as well as the feelings and intentions of the speaker. Active listening shows the other person that their message has been received and is appreciated.
Several aspects play a decisive role in active listening:
Attention and presence: The listener concentrates fully on the speaker, avoids distractions and signals their interest through body language and eye contact.
Empathy and understanding: It is important to put yourself in the other person's shoes and understand their emotions and perspectives.
Giving feedback: By nodding, verbal confirmation or summarising, the listener shows that they understand and follow the speaker.
Asking open questions: By asking specific questions, the listener can deepen the conversation and clarify misunderstandings.
Active listening can be used in various contexts, be it in professional communication, in meetings, in teamwork or in customer service. It not only improves understanding and cooperation, but also promotes a positive working atmosphere and strengthens relationships.
In our internal seminar, we taught the basics of active listening and carried out practical exercises to enable our employees to use this technique effectively in their day-to-day work. The participants learnt how they can avoid misunderstandings, resolve conflicts better and improve communication overall through conscious listening.
Improved team communication: Our employees communicate more clearly and efficiently, which increases collaboration and productivity.
More efficient problem solving: misunderstandings and conflicts can be recognised and resolved more quickly, resulting in a more harmonious working environment.
Strengthening employee loyalty: Active listening makes employees feel valued and taken seriously, which increases their satisfaction and motivation.
Better customer communication: Active listening also leads to better customer loyalty and greater satisfaction in customer service.
At House of PM, we attach great importance to continuous training and the promotion of soft skills such as active listening. Through such training, we want to ensure that our teams are not only well equipped professionally, but also communicatively, to successfully master the challenges of the modern working world.
