Further development at House of PM
For House of PM, moderation techniques are a central component of the professional implementation of workshops, meetings and training – both in-person and online. Our employees have received extensive training in various facilitation techniques and have completed specialized training in which they not only learned the techniques in theory, but also applied and reflected on them in practical units. Each training session was video recorded and then evaluated together in order to promote individual strengths and identify potential for improvement. In this article, we show how our facilitation techniques look in practice and what you as a customer can expect from them.
Preparation and objectives
Our employees know that thorough preparation and clear objectives are the basis for successful facilitation. During the training sessions, attention was paid to ensuring that every facilitation begins with a structured plan. Video recordings during the training sessions allowed them to observe the effect of well-thought-out preparation on the success of a meeting and learn how to tailor their facilitation even more precisely to the respective goals and conditions – whether in person or online.
Methods for activating participants
Active participants are the key to successful meetings and workshops. Our employees have been intensively trained in the targeted use of activation techniques, such as card queries in face-to-face or breakout sessions and digital whiteboards online. By recording their facilitation exercises, they were able to see which techniques work best and how they engage all participants through targeted interactions. In particular, reflecting on the recordings showed how non-verbal communication in face-to-face and verbal facilitation skills online influence the activation of participants.
Structured discussion techniques
Our employees use a variety of structured moderation techniques to guide discussions in a targeted manner. The training videos helped them to understand and adapt the effect and efficiency of methods such as the metaplan method or digital whiteboards. In the recordings, we analyzed together how structured techniques contribute to clarity and efficiency in the discussion and which adjustments are necessary in the online format to maintain concentration and interactivity.
Visualization techniques
Visualization supports the clarity and comprehensibility of discussions and results. During the training, our employees learned visual techniques such as working with flipcharts, pinboards and digital whiteboards. Video analysis of their moderation exercises showed how the targeted use of visualization increases the attention of participants and how visual techniques can be adapted to the respective circumstances – in-person or online – to make the results lively and comprehensible.
Targeted questions and constructive feedback are important elements of moderation. Our employees were trained in questioning techniques that encourage reflection and solution-finding. Video recordings helped to analyze the influence of questions on the course of the conversation and to adjust the timing and tone. They also learned how to give and take feedback in a structured way to improve the process and foster the engagement of everyone involved – in both face-to-face and online formats.
How to deal with challenging situations
Another key skill in moderation is the confident handling of challenging situations, such as conflicts or distractions. As part of the training, our employees went through realistic practice scenarios that prepared them for such situations. Video recordings of these exercises allowed them to reflect on their reactions and develop strategies for dealing with challenges in a professional manner. Especially in the online format, spontaneous and trained reactions were needed to ensure that the process ran smoothly despite technical or social challenges.
Time management and structuring
Our employees are trained to structure meetings and workshops efficiently and to keep an eye on the time. In the training sessions, they received targeted units on time management and tested various methods for adhering to the time schedule. With the help of video evaluation, they analyzed how they allocate time in the individual phases and where there is room for improvement. They developed routines that ensure a clear structure and a focused process for both in-person and online formats.
Evaluation and documentation
The facilitation training also emphasized the importance of following up on meetings and workshops. Our employees were trained in various documentation techniques to help them record results in a clear and structured way. The training videos helped them to see how good follow-up affects the sustainability of the results. Evaluating the videos highlighted the effectiveness of structured documentation and showed how a transparent summary for participants supports the long-term success of the sessions.
With these comprehensive training sessions, which include practical applications and video analysis, our employees are well prepared to effectively and purposefully moderate meetings and workshops in the House of PM – for the best results, both in-person and online.
