Implementation of the Project Management System according to ISO 21500 with productive SEI workshops in Tokyo

How an understanding of cultural awareness was developed for large, international infrastructure projects

>> SUMITOMO ELECTRIC

One company, many locations

Sumitomo Electric Industries, founded in 1897, is a corporate group which develops an extensive range of products including power cables, telecommunication cables and electric wires based on the company's bare copper wire manufacturing technologies. Today, Sumitomo Electric Industries Ltd (SEI) has 414 subsidiaries in over 40 countries and an estimated 280,000 employees worldwide.

The engineering and manufacturing of high-quality cable products is based on SEI’s internal Quality Management System (SEI QMS). The installation and commissioning of cable products is based on the Sumitomo Electric Industries Project Management System (SEI PMS) as part of the overall SEI QMS.

PM Governance and Cultural Awareness: Key component in international infrastructure project

SEI required a project management governance based on ISO 21500 to participate in various tenders throughout Europe. It is also a key requirement by the prospective customers. Therefore, SEI decided to develop a project management system to support the requirements for global power cable projects outside of Japan. The SEI PMS was developed in a team effort together with the SEI Global Project Engineering Department and with the support of House of PM.

In addition, the SEI management decided to take the first steps towards introducing the SEI PMS in the global power cable organization by launching a training course for managers onsite in Tokyo.

The team of SEI Global Project Engineering and House of PM represented Sumitomo as experts in project management in various tenders based on the developed SEI PMS. The trained cultural awareness helped the teams to build mutual understanding and create a common understanding of project management.

Our Contribution

House of PM supported SEI by delivering a project management system (PMS) to support the tendering phase for several projects. Together with the SEI project team, House of PM developed the SEI PMS, which included the components project management governance, project phase model, project management handbook (PMH), and templates for the application of project management system (management templates and project deliverables templates). The distinction between project and process was identified and an understanding of cultural awareness was established. The dedicated engagement with the topics showed, how important it is to recognize and counteract entrepreneurial risks.
